A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
