The Video Platform Grants Viewers Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a fresh option that permits them to reduce the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the company revealed that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a global rollout. This development comes amid a surge in content created by AI, driven by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A significant portion of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to offer the community the power to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” said a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its service labeled as made with AI. Overall, more than 100 million videos are added to the app each day, making AI-generated material a relatively small percentage of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the topic control option in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Other topics that are already be adjusted under the setting encompass current affairs, clothing, cosmetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

Its rules mandate users to label “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans malicious AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the app will now apply an artificially created watermark to content produced via its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing artificial media. This action is designed to deter users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is furthermore establishing a $2m awareness program for professionals and organizations to develop informative material about ethical AI use. This program will support non-profit groups focused on training computer science.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its safety measures, amid discussion over intentions to make redundant hundreds of review team members in the United Kingdom. It is set to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would remain essential, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most distressing content before it is viewed by people. The platform stated a notable drop in shocking and graphic content reviewed by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we additionally believe it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
